My biggest challenge was getting the essay going. I can develop ideas easily and its the part of just starting to type… its reminds me of someone watching you try to paint a mural on a huge canvas, but you have no idea where to start at. Once I got going my ideas began to flow and form and it became much easier. My biggest success was actually getting out the main part of my body paragraphs for class. I used google and just searched analysis for “Monologue of an Onion” to get ideas. It told me about the authors background and helped me understand more about the poem. A helpful website I used was,: http://www.novelguide.com/a/discover/pfs_0000_0024_0/pfs_0000_0024_0_00019.html which tells about the poet and has critical analysis’s of the poem. I don’t necessarily agree with any of the critics but it still helped.

Lady Lazarus

I’m responding to the poem Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath. The poem first caught my eye when I was skimming it I noticed that “nazi” and “jew” were mentioned. Towards the end of the poem it talks about rising from ash. It seems to me that the narrator/poet may be a Jew who survived the Holocaust and she is talking about getting revenge. Such as she is a phoenix, when she mentioned “Out of the Ash/I rise with read hair./And I eat men like air.”. The poem also mentions god and the devil, “Herr God, Herr Lucifer” which may signify the difference between good and evil. Her being good, the “nazi lampshade” being evil.

Monologue of an Onion

I am choosing to do my essay on that poem because it is in a way disturbing. The strangeness of it turned me off of the poem at first, it sort of freaked me out. But it is an unusual poem, which I’m hoping will keep me interested the whole time I am writing the essay. It’s full of emotion, personification and apostrophe. People are always trying to put meaning behind everything, and are always searching for that meaning. This poem illustrates that in an excellent way. The onion is at war with the human that is cutting it. The human is using physical assault against it unknowingly, where as the onion is using words to attempt to educate its agressor.

A few nights ago I wrote this poem, it is about my girlfriend and the way that I feel about her. I didn’t use proper grammar or puncuation throughout some parts, because in class I learned that you don’t have to follow all the rules. I originally decided to write it because most poetry didn’t make much sense to me and I was going to make fun of it by writing a few haiku’s about random things. To me poetry was something that a person wrote when they did to much acid and couldn’t figure out how to type/write there thoughts correctly. How wrong I was. I enjoyed writing what I think is a poem, I’m not sure about stanzas and things but I just wrote what I felt.

just a spark

lit my heart

into a fiery blaze.

with not but a kiss,

something amiss,

i was bliss.

she is sweet

the smell of a rose,

she is my heart my love my life

without her

i died. i died. i died.

Messy Room(Poem)

Messy Room by Shel Silverstein
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
His underwear is hanging on the lamp.
His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,
And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp.
His workbook is wedged in the window,
His sweater’s been thrown on the floor.
His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,
And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door.
His books are all jammed in the closet,
His vest has been left in the hall.
A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,
And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
Donald or Robert or Willie or–
Huh? You say it’s mine? Oh, dear,
I knew it looked familiar!

I chose this poem because it was amusing. I have yet to understand the point of poetry, which I will I’m sure soon. The poem simply reminds me of how my room looks until my mom happens to see it. The way the poet describes how the things are hidden sort of in the room, are things that I have done. The poem makes me feel that instead of always looking at the negatives in other people, look at the negatives in yourself and focus on making them positives. For example; you may call a neighbors house dirty, when in actuality it may be your glass’s that are dirty. It makes me re-think myself when I want to be critical of someone and judge them.
